Upcycling Meat Processing Side-Streams into Premium Pet Treats

Release time:2026-08-21

How can pet food processors convert high-moisture meat trimmings and raw scraps into uniform, export-grade pet treat bites without surface cracking or core wet spots?

On August 19, 2026, Guoxin Group conducted a live workshop trial at our manufacturing facility to evaluate automated continuous drying performance on client-supplied raw meat side-streams.

Traditional batch drying often struggles with case-hardening—where rapid outer drying seals moisture inside the treat core. This trial demonstrated how our integrated forming and multi-layer mesh-belt drying line achieves uniform moisture extraction across high-density meat proteins.

2. The Engineering Challenge

Converting wet meat paste into shelf-stable commercial treats presents three primary processing risks:

  • Case-Hardening: High drying temperatures collapse the outer protein layer, trapping internal moisture and causing mold growth during storage.

  • Structural Crumbling: Inconsistent binder distribution or aggressive mechanical conveying leads to treat breakage before packaging.

  • Protein Denaturation: Excessive heat scorches natural fats, causing dark discoloration and rancid off-odors.

3. Step-by-Step Processing Flow

  1. High-Shear Homogenization: Raw meat trimmings were blended with binder ingredients into a dense, uniform meat dough.

  2. Rotary Mold Forming: The meat dough was fed into an automated rotary forming unit, stamping out clean, identical round pet treat discs.

  3. Automated Conveyor Transfer: An inclined food-grade belt delivered the delicate wet discs directly to the drying inlet, maintaining uniform piece spacing without deformation.

  4. Multi-Zone Convective Drying: Materials traveled through a multi-tier $SUS304$ mesh-belt tunnel. As treats dropped gently between belt tiers, materials flipped naturally to ensure 360° hot-air penetration across all surfaces.

  5. Continuous Discharge: Fully dried pet treats discharged smoothly onto a cooling belt for immediate density and moisture verification.

4. Trial Results & Quality Evaluation

  • Uniform Core Moisture (<8%): Multi-stage thermal zoning evaporated core moisture gradually, eliminating wet centers while maintaining structural integrity.

  • Clean Snap & Durability: Finished treats exhibited consistent hardness with zero internal void pockets or surface cracking, standing up to high-speed packaging equipment.

  • Color & Aroma Retention: Low-to-medium temperature zoning preserved the natural meat scent and golden-brown color required for premium market positioning.

FAQ

Q1: Can this continuous mesh-belt dryer handle different shapes and formulations of pet treats?

A: Yes. By adjusting the front-end forming head (rotary mold or extruder dye), the line handles round bites, sticks, bone shapes, or jerky strips. Belt speeds and multi-zone temperature profiles are saved as custom recipes in the Siemens PLC touchscreen.

Q2: What heat source options are available for industrial pet treat drying lines?

A: Depending on factory utility access, Guoxin Group offers Air-Energy Heat Pumps (maximum electrical energy efficiency), Natural Gas Burners, Steam Heat Exchangers, or Biomass Heat Exchangers. Indirect heating systems ensure zero exhaust gases contact the food product.
